Untangling the Past: How One School’s Wiring Closets Got a Much-Needed Reboot

No one ever walks into a School building thinking, “I wonder what their wiring closets look like.” But maybe they should.

Because when those closets are messy, outdated, or just plain dangerous, it doesn’t stay hidden for long. Connections drop. Cameras freeze. The Wi-Fi goes down during testing week, and suddenly, the ripple effects are real.

In one school, decades of patchwork cabling and leftover equipment had piled up, hidden behind locked doors. So we cleaned house. We pulled the past off the walls and rewired it for the future, with safety, reliability, and common sense in mind.

This wasn’t about being fancy. It was about doing things right.

A Closet Full of Problems

The first closet, was a textbook case of “how did it get like this?”

Tucked inside an active maintenance space, it had become a tangled museum of old tech: cable TV gear no one used, phone lines dating back 20 years, and network cables so brittle they snapped in your hands. Nothing was labeled. Nothing was consistent.

A 30-amp wall outlet wired into a 20-amp circuit.

This wasn’t just a messy closet, it was an accident waiting to happen. And yet, it was still carrying active network traffic.

Making a Clean Break

Step One: Get everything out.

We moved all the active gear and rerouted every cable to a better location. The only thing left behind was a single, newer fiber line running back to the main data room, still in perfect shape and ready to be repurposed later.

With the gear gone and the space cleared, It finally looks like what it always should’ve been: an empty wall. Clean. Safe. Uncomplicated.

The Hot Mess Next Door

This was where most of the school’s action lived, cameras, access points, and network drops. But the setup didn’t do it any favors.

A tiny rack jammed full of cabling had turned into a heat trap. No airflow, no organization. Just a wall of wires blocking every vent on the switches, which overheated constantly.

And the space? It doubled as an OT/PT therapy room. That meant student equipment was stored right next to exposed ports, blinking lights, and warm electronics. Not ideal for anyone.

If the other room was unsafe, this one was impossible to support.

What Order Looks Like

The new setup flipped the script.

We removed all the old gear, reran and rerouted cables cleanly, and installed a brand-new floor-standing rack. It’s everything the last one wasn’t, organized, ventilated, and easy to work on.

Cables are color-coded:

  1. Orange for Cameras
  2. Blue for Standard Network
  3. Green for Wireless Access Points

Everything’s labeled and routed through dedicated patch panels. No more tracing mystery wires just to unplug something.

Most importantly, the entire cabinet can now be locked. It’s secure, serviceable, and no longer sharing space with student resources.

Why This Matters More Than It Seems

To the untrained eye, it just look cleaner. But this kind of work delivers real, measurable value:

  • Less Issues: With clean cable paths and good airflow, the network stays up longer and recovers faster.
  • Support: Techs no longer waste time tracing unlabeled wires or guessing at port assignments.
  • Future-Ready: New devices can be added without chaos.
  • Professionalism: Anyone walking in, vendor, auditor, or IT staff, knows instantly that this system is cared for.

Behind the scenes, this cleanup means fewer disruptions. Fewer surprises. And a better experience for staff, students, and anyone who needs to rely on the network doing its job.

The Hidden Wins That Keep Things Running

We’re used to thinking of upgrades in terms of new software or sleek devices. But wiring closets? They’re the foundation. And when they’re ignored, it catches up.

This project didn’t come with balloons or a ribbon-cutting. Just a lot of hard work, and a clear goal: Make things better!

Now, thanks to a team that knows what they’re doing and a school that trusted the process, these wiring closets are something they’ve never been before, reliable, efficient, and safe.

You won’t see these changes on a welcome tour. But ask anyone in IT: they’re the ones that make everything else possible.

If this looks familiar, let’s talk. We offer free assessments to help you turn your wiring closets into something you can rely on.a, tellus.
